John Legend commends how love can rise above fringes, both regional and social, with his powerful “Surefire” visual. The video, directed by Cole Wiley, takes after a youthful interracial couple, Roberto and Jamila, as they fight prejudices and laws that undermine their relationship.
After a contention with Jamila’s objecting father, Immigration and Customs Enforcement operators expel Roberto back to Mexico. Jamila bums a ride south and tracks down her sweetheart at home with his mom. “I may not know a a lot of things, but I know that we’re surefire,” John Legend sings on the number over groaning fretless bass, taking advantage of the video’s topics of flexibility.
In an announcement, Director Wiley said he made the video as a demonstration of “eternal faith” – and a response to far reaching hostile to migrant and bigot talk penetrating American culture in 2017.
“Surefire” shows up on Legend’s fifth Album, Darkness and Light. The artist performed “Surefire” Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards, alongside a two part harmony rendition of Florida Georgia Line’s “Sacred.”
